How to Split Cruise Onboard Expenses: Drink Packages, Gratuities, and Separate Folios

Editorial scope: This guide uses current official sources and avoids guarantees. Operator policies, inventory and prices must be rechecked for the exact booking.

The safest default for unrelated cabin mates is two travelers, two payment methods and two onboard accounts. A shared cabin does not require a shared financial life. Confirm the line's setup during check-in and review the actual folio before leaving the ship.

Separate the booking costs first

Before either person pays, write down the cruise fare, taxes, required charges, insurance and any agency fee attributable to each traveler. If one person temporarily pays the operator for both, use a traceable payment method and a dated receipt. Do not rely on an informal promise made after a non-refundable deadline.

Configure onboard charging with the operator

Royal Caribbean's published SeaPass terms use an account owner who may add other guests as authorized purchasers. This is one operator's system, not a universal model. Ask your line whether each guest can attach a separate card or cash account and verify the result after boarding.

Treat packages as personal unless the terms say otherwise

Royal Caribbean and NCL currently describe beverage benefits as personal and not shareable. Virgin's Bar Tab is a different type of onboard credit and its FAQ says it can be shared. Never extrapolate one line's rule to another or assume a package can be transferred between guests.

Use a simple approval rule

Gratuities and service charges differ by operator, market and fare. Read the current booking confirmation rather than quoting a generic percentage.

Use SoloCruz after choosing the sailing
